Against All Odds
This is us.
In December 2010 I met Miguel. He is the brother of my best friends boyfriend. He was living in Florida but was home in SE Michigan for a job interview. Thinking he was about to move home we stayed in touch. Time when by and the job offer kept being moved back a month at a time. He was still in Florida and I in Toledo, Ohio. I went to visit several times that year and he made it home two more times before the distance finally got the best of us in August 2011. Fast forward November 2011. I get a phone call from my best friend telling me Miguel was moving back. We hadn't spoken since the break up in August. Not knowing what would happen I refused to get my hopes up.
It wasn't long before we got together, spent some time figuring things out and soon we were us again.
Fast forward again to July 2012. We've been living together since the beginning of the year. We were planning a small getaway. I had always loved Mackinac since I had visited as a child. Miguel being from "the great state of Michigan" as he always said, had never been further north than Mid-Michigan.
We made our way to the Island, took a carriage ride, saw the fort and found our way to the hotel. I had seen the move Somewhere In Time dozens of times. I excitedly explained the story to Miguel. He humored me, listening to me ramble on. So I thought.
We toured the Grand Hotel, the grounds and spent an hour or so in the gardens. Miguel, being a professional photographer, was taking a lot of pictures all day. We were standing by the fountain in the garden. He told me to turn and face the hotel so he could take a picture in silhouette. He then tapped me on the back, when I turned around he was on one knee, ring in hand.
He had listened to my ramblings over and over about the hotel. Not just that day but in the days preceding our trip. It was absolutely perfect. I couldn't have planned it better myself.
I'm sure in years to come we will return to the Island as often as possible. It truly is a magical place.
