Historic British Landing

Historic British Landing is located on the northwestern lake shore on Mackinac Island near the corner of
Shore Road
and British Landing Road.
This is the site believed to be where British soldiers landed during their successful surprise attack against the American Garrison of Fort Mackinac. The assault took place over July 16 and 17 of 1812. The British Troops and their Native American Allies dragged two cannons to the highest point on the Island (current site of
Fort Holmes)
which can be seen above
Fort Mackinac.
Once the British made their presence known, the Americans surrendered without firing a shot. The Americans did not even know that the War of 1812 had been declared, which partly accounted for their lack of preparedness.
