Island House Hotel on Mackinac Island

Island House Hotel

Historic Landmark & Great Location

The historic Island House Hotel on Mackinac Island was built in 1852. It has a great location, close to ferries, restaurants, pubs, shopping, and historic sites.

This Island hotel offers everything needed for a fun-filled family vacation or a romantic get-away. It is large enough to accommodate a wedding party or family reunion with its 93 guest rooms and three suites. All rooms are air conditioned and have cable television, telephones, private baths, hair dryers and make-up mirrors.

We love the sweeping front porch, just perfect for relaxing while you sip your favorite drink and enjoy the sights. You can also lounge in Adirondack chairs on the front lawn and have a closer view of the horses, bikes and people going by.

Island House Hotel

This is one of the few hotels that have a heated indoor pool, whirlpool, and sauna. The Pool House is adjacent to the Ice House Bar and Grill where you can enjoy lunch outside or in the air-conditioned Bar and Grill area. You can also check your email on their computer which is always connected for your convenience.

The Grill Room overlooking the Straits of Mackinac is the perfect place for a gourmet dinner. Lake Michigan Perch is one of our favorite entrees. The Grill Room also serves a full breakfast daily and lunch on the Terrace, weather permitting.

Island House Hotel Bike Rental
Do you want to ride around the island? You can rent a bike right on the premises in front of the hotel.

The hotel staff is among the best. We continually hear comments about the courteous and prompt service provided. Rest assured that they are committed to meeting your requests so you will have a memorable Mackinac Island vacation.

Is There a Friendly Ghost
at the 157 Year Old Island House Hotel?

For many years staff have quietly talked about a friendly ghost that they have affectionately called, Charlie. Charlie likes to turn on the jacuzzi in Room 409, move things around in other rooms plus close and open doors. A four-member Michigan Area Paranormal Investigative Team stayed at the hotel in mid-October to film and record on the 4th floor between 9 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.

They also carried a thermometer to detect drops or spikes in room temperatures at the Island House Hotel. They reported that there were definite swings of temperature in room 400. A housekeeping maid one time reported that while cleaning room 400 the shower turned on by itself plus her bucket flew into the hall.

So, if you are intrigued by ghosts ask to stay on the 4th floor (specifically room 409 and room 400) at the Island House and you perhaps might encounter Charlie, the friendly ghost.

Insider Tip: When you return to the Island House Hotel at the end of the day, pull up a chair on the lawn and share stories with other guests around the fire at one of their two chimeneas. Listen to the clip-clop of the horses as carriages pass by and see the lights twinkling in the harbor. What a cozy way to relax and enjoy your Mackinac Island vacation!
