Mackinac Island Airport

Mackinac Island Airport

The Mackinac Island Airport is an important link for year-round residents and vacationers in the winter when the ferry service is discontinued due to the ice build-up in the Straits of Mackinac between St. Ignace, Michigan and the Island.

Winter Departures from Mackinac County Airport, St Ignace Mi are:

  • 8 a.m. (not on Sunday)
  • 10 a.m.
  • 12:30 p.m.
  • 3 p.m.
  • 4:45 p.m.

Return flights from the Island are 10 minutes later.

Arrive early during these winter months for you might find that your flight is departing with you just getting out of your car or off your snowmobile thinking you had plenty of time!

The airline company that charters flights to Mackinac Island Airport year round is Great Lakes Air, Inc. and is located at the Mackinac County Airport in St Ignace.

Call Great Lakes Air for more detailed information at 906-643-7165.

Airport Is Busy In Summer Months

In the summer Great Lakes Air has only chartered planes and you must call ahead to reserve your flight date and time. They do not have scheduled departure times in the summer.

The Island Airport handles only small airplanes which are either private or chartered. It is important to note that there is no fuel available at the airport. The closest airports with fuel are in St. Ignace Mi in the Upper Peninsula or Cheboygan, Mi and Pellston, Mi.

Click here for more details about the Pellston Regional Airport service to Detroit.

New weather equipment will be installed this summer 2010. Other improvements are clearing of more trees from the two runway approaches and repair of the runway pavement. All improvements are scheduled for completion sometime this summer. These improvements are being funded by a grant approved by the Michigan Aeronautics Commission.

Insider Tip: There are no horse-drawn taxis waiting at the Island airport so call ahead to arrange for one. It is about a 25 minute walk from the terminal to Main Street.

Taxi phone number: 906-847-3323
