Michigan Books Online
Michigan books online features Voices of Michigan, an Anthology of Michigan’s Finest New Authors, compiled by Jane Winston and Mary Jane Barnwell.
Jane Winston writes:
The first edition of Voices of Michigan, an Anthology of Michigan’s Finest New Authors was published in 1991. The cover of this one was done by Marlee Musser Brown, the forward written by Sue Harrison, a Michigan author, and the interior art work done by Rob Harrell a nephew of mine with a special talent.
The project was born out of a desire to see aspiring authors, with Michigan roots, get published. The writing contest was begun by Jane Winston and Mary Jane Barnwell, the stories judged by primarily Michigan readers, required lots of hours and second starts, and done primarily by a volunteer workforce from the art on the cover to the editing that was needed.
The fourth and final edition was 2002 and had both youth and adult contest winners. That cover was done by Marta Peterson Olson, the forward written by Dale Hull of Petoskey, and the interior art work done by students throughout Michigan. The first edition was 250 pages, the fourth, and final, was nearly 400 pages, so the project was well-received and grew in popularity through the four years and four volumes.
The remaining two volumes had cover designs by Mary Hramiec-Hoffman and forwards by Kathy-Jo Wargin and Thomas Lynch, both Michigan authors. The artwork was provided by Charlene A. Oestman, Karen R. James and Rob Harrell.
The pages of the four volumes are packed with short stories, poems and essays written by unpublished authors from throughout Michigan, many from Mackinac Island: Glen Young, Peter Olson, “Doc,” Stu Stuart, Linda Barlekamp and Melissa Croghan.
It was an exciting project and well-received by everyone. Unfortunately, health and other issues got in the way, and it had to end! However, there are still a few of the four volumes remaining, and they are yours should you like them!Contact: Jane Winston ~ email@example.com for further information.
