A Native American Pow Wow including A Taste Of Ojibwa And Early French Culture All In One Exciting Weekend this Labor Day weekend!
If you are planning a trip to the Mackinac Straits area or Mackinac Island this Labor Day you aren't going to want to miss the Rendezvous of the Straits Pow Wow that will be held at the New France Discovery Center at Father Marquette Memorial Park on August 27th and 28th. This exciting 2 day event will give visitors a taste of two historic cultures that played important roles in the history of this area.
A Native American Pow Wow...to appreciate and to educate.
The Ojibwa Pow Wow at the Rendezvous of the Straits Pow Wow, features contemporary native music, art, dancing and other glimpses into the how Ojibwa people's history and way of life both before the white man arrived to the area and their budding friendship with the French trappers of the day.
For those who have never attended an Ojibwa Pow Wow before it is a rare opportunity to learn first hand about the culture of the Ojibwa people who have inhabited this area for thousands of years. You'll get a first hand glimpse into some of their traditions that have been carried down generation after generation and are still part of their lives today.
You'll discover you are richer for this opportunity.
The French Encampment
You will also get an opportunity of what it was like for those early French trappers and settlers who arrived in the Straits area to find a paradise filled with beaver, bear, fish and timber.
The French encampment will offer demonstration of Native and French cooking, French woodworking, Native and French sewing. You'll see how cattail mats and birch bark containers were made as well as how early French settlers traveled this area by dug out and birch bark canoe, snowshoes, and toboggans.
Originally this Native American Pow Wow and the French Encampment event were two separate events but, in 2009 the two events they joined together to give visitors a real taste of how these two unique cultures lived in harmony for many years on the Michigan frontier. And this event truly gives you such insight. You almost feel as though you have stepped back in the late 1600s through the 1850s and get to witness an exciting time in Michigan and the country's history.

- and those under 12 are free.
You aren't going to find such an entertaining and exciting look at history for any better price!
