The Windermere Hotel is the perfect hotel if you are looking for a quaint hotel that has a feel of a bed and breakfast inn on beautiful Mackinac Island.
Most rooms enjoy a view of Mackinac Island’s harbor and the Straits of Mackinac. Rooms in the back enjoy the beautiful Windermere Hotel garden and landscaped backyard. We love the fact that the hotel is not only a historic building built in 1887 but has been owned by the Doud family for over 105 years. Margaret Doud, part owner with Jeanette Doud, has also been Mackinac Island’s mayor for the past 30 plus years. If you want to know the scoop about this village, just ask them for they know what’s happening! And, you might be pleasantly surprised that you find yourself mentioned in the village newspaper, The Town Crier, about your visit to their beloved island.
The location is terrific if you want to get away from the crowds and want a more relaxing atmosphere on your Mackinac Island vacation. Across the street is Windermere Point with picnic tables and a great place to fly a kite, enjoy the beach or let your children run around.
The Doghouse, Windermere’s Hotel restaurant on Windermere Point serves hot dogs, brats, soda pop, black cows and is a fun place to have a picnic with your family. They also will help you with a larger gathering of family and friends such as a Rehearsal Dinner or Family Reunion.
Be prepared to just relax quietly at this wonderful hotel for there are no telephones or televisions in the rooms. There is a television on the main floor where you can watch with other vacationers.
A favorite spot when staying at The Windermere Hotel is just about 100 yards from its front door. The Mackinac Island’s fabulous library where you can go to enjoy reading a book while listening to the waves hit the shoreline just outside its backdoor. Also, the library has a wonderful children's library that can be helpful on a rainy day!
The front porch is a relaxing place to watch the harbor and
carriages
passing by you. The hotel is super clean, it’s relaxing and it’s one of our favorite small hotels to send our family and friends when visiting Mackinac Island.
Insider Tips: At the Windermere Hotel on Mackinac Island “The Family Room” is a nice cozy room with two Queen beds and a twin – perfect for a family. It overlooks the gardens but you can still hear the
horses
clip-clop from your window. And, make sure you ask if Glen will meet you at the ferry dock to help you with your luggage – he’s terrific!
