Wings of Mackinac

Butterfly Conservatory

The Wings of Mackinac should be on everyone's list to visit when vacationing on Mackinac Island. So, on your next trip to lovely Mackinac Island, why not let your imagination and your romantic spirit take flight by visiting this conservatory. No, it's not an airplane museum but a quaint and special miniature type zoo known as a butterfly house.

Located up the hill behind the Grand Hotel and next to the Surrey Hill Square Carriage Museum, the Wings of Mackinac is a newly constructed butterfly conservatory. While it is not a far walk from downtown, the hill to it can be steep for elderly people thus the conservatory is best reached by taking one of the wonderful horse drawn cabs or by taking a carriage ride.

For those staying at the Grand Hotel itself the butterfly house makes a nice addition to a romantic stay or honeymoon or a great family activity.

There are knowledgeable curators to answer all your questions about the butterflies. When you step inside the actual butterfly exhibit you will be entranced by the lush plants, the colorful butterflies and the warmth and beauty of the building itself.

Wear colorful clothing and sit for a spell to relax and contemplate the experience of being in this special place. You will be touched and surprised to see one of these gentle creatures pause a moment in flight to land on you where you can see them up close and personal.

Linger in the magical world of these beautiful insects and enjoy quiet and peaceful moments surrounded by the sheer beauty of nature.

Rates are more than reasonable at $6.00 for adults, children 5 to 12 pay only $3.00 and those 4 and under get in free.

A Most Romantic Wedding Location

For those who want to plan a unique and romantic small wedding the Wings of Mackinac is the perfect setting. This conservatory is able to hold up to 40 guests and is a spectacular setting for your Mackinac Island dream wedding. Imagine saying your vows in this lush setting as butterflies gently fly about in the sweet scented air. You can even have your reception on the grounds of this Butterfly Conservatory. Or your bridal party and guests can walk down to the Grand Hotel after your Wings of Mackinac wedding and enjoy an intimate reception in one of its private dining rooms.

Marie Steensma is the owner of this wonderful establishment and is just as beautiful & gentle as her butterflies...Marie will help you plan your wedding to perfection. She can also perform the wedding ceremony in the Wings of Mackinac conservatory, or outside on the Surrey Hills lawn, or on another wonderful Mackinac Island site of your choosing.

For those already on their honeymoon, anniversary or just enjoying a romantic getaway a visit to this special place can add the little touch of romance to your night or weekend stay.

Don't forget your camera and a special butterfly souvenir!

Insider Tip: Be sure to stop by the wonderful Surrey Hill Square Carriage Museum just behind the Butterfly Conservatory.
